Nihonbashi (日本橋), which literally means “Japan bridge” is a district of Tokyo, located just north of Ginza and northeast of Tokyo Station. It is available to go to Nihonbashi from Tokyo Station for ten minutes walk.

The bridge really exists there and the Kilometre Zero of Japan has been on the middle of Nihonbashi bridge in Tokyo since the early Edo (江戸) period.

This area used to be the one of the most vibrant commercial area in Japan because the bridge was the beginning of the Five Routes (五街道). Also maritime trade brought there tons of  various goods from the around the country. There has been well-established department stores like Mitsukoshi (三越) and Takashimaya (高島屋), and some pharmaceutical companies since the Edo era (that means it is over 400 years.)

Nowadays, it is well known as the representative financial district in Japan. There are the Bank of Japan and Tokyo Stock Exchange around this area.
